Arbor Station Elementary Students learned the importance of staying safe on two wheels in a fun-filled educational Bike Safety Rodeo event sponsored by Metro Atlanta Cycling Club and Free Bikes 4 Kidz. With a goal of instilling confidence and reducing the risk of accidents among young riders, the event focused on teaching first-time bike riders the mechanics and safety of bike riding.
Cycling club members, teachers and volunteers offered guidance and support while children were introduced to lessons on proper helmet fitting, rules of the road, and basic bike-handling skills.
In addition to ASES students engaging in bike safety tips, the lucky students received a special surprise from Free Bikes 4 Kidz as they generously donated 22 bicycles along with helmets and water bottles. This simple act of kindness turned many of these students into first-time bike owners, and the smiles on their faces were a testament to the joy and freedom biking brings to children and families.
While bike safety was the primary focus of the educational event, parents were also able to signup their child for a free haircut from D1 Barber and select a new book of choice from ASES community partner, Books-A-Million Douglasville. This initiative aimed to promote literacy and encourage a love for reading among children, complementing the event's focus on physical activity.
ASES parents were grateful for the opportunity to participate in the event. "I am incredibly thankful to Dr. Felton and the Metro Atlanta Cycling Club and all the sponsors for organizing this event," said ASES parent Beverly Pickens, who was attending with her 7-year-old son. "He had never ridden a bike before, and now he's gained valuable skills and the confidence to ride safely,” she said.
The event’s success demonstrates the power of community partnerships in promoting important life skills and values such as bike safety and literacy. By working together, the Metro Atlanta Cycling Club, PTSO, Books A Million, D1 Barbers, and other sponsors were able to create a memorable and impactful experience for Arbor Station students.
“In a time where digital entertainment often takes precedence, events like this remind us of the importance of physical activity, good reading habits, and community engagement in the lives of children,” said ASES Principal Dr. Emily Felton. “The Bike Safety Rodeo exemplified these values and will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on those who attended,” she added.
