What does AVID look like in the Douglas County School System?
Organization
AVID explicitly teaches students organizational strategies to make them successful. Students are taught to self-manage materials and time. The most important strategy taught is the use of the AVID binder.
Instruction
Note-taking skills are the foundation for student success in academic classes and study groups. Taking notes demands that students interact with the material in ways that help them organize key ideas into patterns. Learning to take thorough, usable, notes from lectures, books, discussions and videos takes practice and must be explicitly taught. These notes are maintained and organized in the binders.
Culture
Each school created a culture of being college bound. This took the form of formalized lessons regarding colleges and careers. Teachers posted their college and fraternal affiliations outside their classrooms. There were numerous bulletin boards and other displays.
