Ten Seniors Named Georgia Scholars

Ten students from Douglas County were among a total of 323 graduating seniors from across Georgia to be recognized as 2021 Georgia Scholars, State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced on April 29. Through the Georgia Scholar program, the Georgia Department of Education identifies and honors high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. Students eligible for Georgia Scholar recognition are high school seniors who exhibit excellence in all phases of school life, in community activities, and in the home.





Sammi Zhu, DCHS


Sammi ZhuSammi Zhu will graduate from Douglas County High School's impressive international baccalaureate program. She is STAR Student for DCHS and Douglas County, meaning her SAT score was the top score for all students in Douglas County. She is also a Board Scholar and Honor Scholar. She is one of the nationwide semifinalists for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship. The scholarship provides exceptionally talented students with up to $40,000 annually for four years of college. Sammi has been accepted at Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she has been offered a $206,052 scholarship, Georgia Tech and other prestigious universities. Sammi will attend Harvard University.



Rhyan Brown, AHS

Rhyan BrownRhyan Brown has been involved in several academic and honor organizations including National Honor Society, Beta Club, Key Club, FBLA, International Club, DECA, and the Student Government Association. She participated in the Youth Leadership Douglas and  Youth Leadership Douglas Mentor Programs. She has served as class president for three years and has been vice-president of DECA. She lettered in cheerleading, was recognized as a scholar athlete, and was the varsity cheerleading captain. Awards include earring the Golden Coaches Cup for cheerleading and being voted Miss AHS by her peers for senior superlatives. Rhyan will attend the University of Georgia where she will major in biology on the pre-med track. 

Alexandra Brookshire, AHS

BrookshireAlexandra Brookshire is a member of  BETA Club, National Honor Society, and Chick-fil-A Leader Academy. She is vice-president of the International Club, treasurer for Key Club, and was a member of both the stage crew and performing tech crew for several musicals. In marching band, she served as band lieutenant, flute squad leader, and woodwind captain. Alexandra is also a member of a symphonic band where she plays flute and piccolo. She danced with Douglasville School of Dance and has been named a member of the Douglas County Honor Band and the District 7 Honor Band. She was a state candidate for the United States Presidential Scholar Program. Alexandra will be attend Berry College this fall where she will be in the honors college and major in music education with a minor in psychology.

Roman Compitello, AHS

CompitelloRoman Compitello is one of two STAR Students for Alexander High School. He  is a member of National Honor Society, an Airman in the Civil Air Patrol which is a civilian auxiliary of the US Air Force, and he is a pole vaulter for the track team. He worked as a camp counselor for the Immune Deficiency Foundation and was responsible for coordinating the Atlanta Walk for Primary Immune Deficiency. Roman is in the top 10% of the senior class and will attend Purdue University in the fall to study Aeronautical Engineering.



Ja’nae Wray, AHS

WrayJa’nae Wray has participated in softball, basketball, and track and field. This season she was named Regional Softball Player of the Year for Region 5-6AAAAAA. She is a scholar-athlete and has maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking high level classes at AHS and participating in dual enrollment. She is a member of DECA, the National Honor Society, BETA Club, and Key Club. She enjoys volunteering with the Police Athletic League, A Servant’s Heart, and training young girls to play softball. Ja'nae will attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham on a softball scholarship and major in business management. She would like to pursue a career in entertainment and sports management.


Wesley Smith, AHS

SmithWesley Smith has been involved in numerous academic and social organizations including National Honor Society, International Club, Key Club, Hispanic Honors Society, and Student Government Association where he serves as the senior class vice-president. He was the football team captain during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons. Wesley is a four year scholar-athlete, 2019-2020 football defensive MVP, and was named 2020-2021 Varsity Football - Mr. Alexander. He was also chosen as homecoming king, and voted Mr. Alexander by his fellow peers. Wesley will attend the University of Georgia and major in biology on the pre-med pathway.


Jacquelyn Jones, AHS

JonesJacquelyn Jones is in the top 10% of the senior class. She plans to go to Troy University and major in bio-medical science. After attending medical school, she hopes to pursue a career in anesthesiology. Jacqueline is part of the marching band, serving  as assistant drum major and brass captain. She participates in school musicals, school show choir, All-State Honor Chorus, and District Honor Band. She is also involved in National Honor Society, BETA Club, Key Club, Hispanic Honor Society, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. At her church, she is a youth church leader, member of the performance dance team, and hosts services on Sundays and Wednesdays for children.


Matthew Colson, AHS

ColsonMatthew Colson has maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking high level courses throughout high school. He has been involved in the National Honor Society, Robotics Team, FBLA, and youth choir. He is also a varsity letterman in football. In his free time, he enjoys making entertainment films with his peers.  Matthew plans to attend Georgetown University as a biology major, then pursue a bio-medical engineering degree and eventually start his own engineering firm.



Christina Webb, AHS

WebbChristina Webb has participated in National Honor Society and Hispanic Honor Society for three years of high school. She has been in chorus for four years and participated in the spring musical her junior year. Christina has maintained stellar grades and is in the 10% of the senior class. She will attend Georgia State University in the fall and major in nursing and become a pediatric nurse.




Trenton Haines, AHS

HainesTrenton Haines is a well-rounded scholar-athlete and is in the top 10% of his class. He has been a member of the football and golf teams all four years of high school. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Chick-fil-A Leader Academy, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes leader. He has had perfect attendance from kindergarten through 12th grade. Trenton is active in his church youth group and sports ministries. He will attend Young Harris College in the fall and  major in mathematics and finance.
