Score for Students With Disabilities Subgroup Surges Eight Points

The Douglas County School System (DCSS) Class of 2019 high school graduation rate of 87.4% once again surpassed the graduation rate for Georgia. According to data released by the Georgia Department of Education on September 18, 2019, the graduation rate for the state was 82%. Scores in Douglas County increased from 86.5% in 2018 to 87.4% in 2019. For the fifth consecutive year, all five high schools in Douglas County exceeded the state graduation rate of 82%.

“Our goal in the Douglas County School System is for every student not only to graduate, but to graduate prepared for college or the military or with the skills needed to succeed in the workforce,” said Superintendent Trent North. “While we are proud of the gains we are making, we will continue to work with our students to achieve at the highest levels. In particular, we are working to improve our scores on high school End of Course tests. Earning a high school diploma and having the skills to succeed at the next level are essential for having a successful career and becoming an engaged and productive citizen.”

The 2019 graduation rate for the Douglas County School System is higher than many other school districts in the state, including Cherokee, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Rockdale, and Troup Counties.

The U.S. Department of Education requires that Georgia report the graduation rate using the adjusted cohort rate. The four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate is defined as the cohort when a student first enters 9th grade and is calculated based on the number of students who graduate within four years.

Chapel Hill High School and New Manchester High School saw the largest increase in graduation rate. Chapel Hill increased from 89.4% in 2018 to 92.6% in 2019, and New Manchester increased from 84.8% to 87%. Douglas County High School also saw an increase, from 81.9% in 2018 to 83.9% in 2019, and Alexander remained steady at 92.8%.  Lithia Springs High School saw a slight decrease, from 83.6% in 2018 to 82.2% in 2019.

“The graduation rate is a reflection of the hard work that our elementary and middle school teachers and administrators do every day to prepare our students for the rigorous work of high school courses,” said Melanie Manley, Assistant Superintendent of Student Achievement. “In addition, our high school teachers, counselors, and administrators work tirelessly to provide the support our students need to be successful.”

The Georgia Department of Education also reports the graduation rates by subgroup. Of particular note is the increase in graduation rate for the Students With Disabilities (SWD) subgroup in the Douglas County School System, from 66.8% in 2018 to 74.9% in 2019. The state graduation rate for the SWD subgroup is 62.9%.
