The City of Atlanta will welcome Super Bowl in less than two weeks, but it will not welcome perpetrators of human trafficking. To educate parents and the community about the dangers of sex trafficking, the Douglas County School System will present a seminar tackling the nation’s human trafficking crisis.
A noted expert on human trafficking will present at the January 28 event. Dalia Racine served as a prosecutor for 15 years in Fulton and DeKalb Counties, specializing in human trafficking and now trains law enforcement and prosecutors across the country.
“Sex trafficking knows no boundaries,” Racine warns. “As a prosecutor, I have worked on cases that involved children from Douglas County being sold for sex and men from Douglas County buying sex from children. We are not immune.”
With the majority of the 1.5 million victims of trafficking being children, the seminar presents a vital opportunity to reach parents and educate them about the warning signs of exploitation and the laws designed to protect Douglas County youth.
“The biggest roadblock to protecting our children from human trafficking is lacking the knowledge it exists. With the Super Bowl coming to Atlanta, statistically, opportunities for children to be trafficked for sex will increase,” Racine explains. “However, the risk to our children to be vulnerable to this despicable crime existed before the Super Bowl and will last long after it leaves Atlanta.”
Racine hopes this important seminar will help bring awareness and prevention to the problem of sex trafficking in our community.
“As students, parents, and educators, it is imperative we protect our children by knowing the signs to look for and how to get those at-risk the resources they need to escape their exploitation,” Racine says.
This timely, free event is open to the public. Douglas County High School will host the seminar on Monday, January 28 at 6:30 pm in the Theater at 8705 Campbellton Street in Douglasville.
