A Winston Elementary staff member passes out food at the "Passport Around the World" event held Jan. 23, 2026.

Students at Winston Elementary traveled the world without leaving campus during a "Passport Winston staff member Vanessa Colin leads an activity during the Passport Around the World event.Around the World" multicultural day on Jan. 23.

Students checked in at the boarding station at "Winston International Airport" to receive their passports and begin their journey, which included visiting 11 countries for hands-on cultural and learning experiences.

Students traveled to international stations representing China, Jamaica, Russia, Haiti, Japan, Italy, the Dominican Republic, France, Mexico, Nigeria and Ireland, where they learned about each country's traditions and sampled foods from around the world, including banana chips and water crackers from Jamaica, chin chin from Nigeria and candy from Mexico.

They also participated in interactive activities such as matching games, cultural games and hands-on learning stations that helped deepen their understanding of each country. As they visited each station, students received stamps in their passports, making the experience both educational and exciting.

School counselor Sharleta Smith said the event was made even more special with the support and involvement of parents, who helped host stations and engage students throughout the day.

"As a school counselor, it is very important that students see themselves reflected and feel that their culture is embraced and celebrated," Smith said. "Celebrating diversity helps support students' social and emotional well-being and fosters a sense of belonging within our school community."
