The Stewart Middle School DIVAS, an acronym for Developing Integrity, Virtues and Awareness of Self, recently welcomed new members for this school year.
According to the group’s sponsor and English Language Arts Teacher Tanganeki Weatherspoon, “these young ladies have committed to building character, leadership, and self-awareness as they grow into strong role models for their peers and community.”
Similar to a sorority, Weatherspoon explained, DIVAS brings girls together through the bond of sisterhood, allows them to explore common interests in a safe space, and experience community service in a different light.
Activities focus on topics such as etiquette, banking and saving, Seven Habits of Effective Teens, study habits/work ethics, fundraising, stepping/dancing/singing, mother-daughter activities such as cooking and shopping, and serving as a mentor for a younger girl.
