CCI Spanish students

Douglas County College and Career Institute (CCI) Spanish I students dove into “The World of Colors” to start the school year as they connected art with language and tapped into their creativity. Using forks instead of paint brushes to implement the stippling/smearing technique, they created colorful art pieces while learning to name the colors in Spanish.

“Learning Spanish is not just about knowing vocabulary,” said CCI Spanish Teacher, Yovanna Chong. “It is about connecting classes with different disciplines like art, math, social studies, science, etc. My students love being active and immersed in the language, which is why they complete the calendar in Spanish every day, sing, play, and enjoy Fridays, which are cultural days ‘One Class, Many Cultures’,” she added.

A native of Peru, Chong is new to CCI, but not to teaching. She previously taught at Chapel Hill Middle School. “I’ve been a Spanish teacher for many years,” she said, “and I love teaching Spanish.”
