Georgia Standards of Excellence - Mathematics

First Steps: An Approach to the Georgia Standards of Excellence for MATHEMATICS

1.       Begin with the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe eight practices that mathematics educators at all levels (K-12) should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” with longstanding importance in mathematics education. They are similar to our current Mathematical Practices.

2.        Next, go to the glossary and tables.

The glossary contains terminology that is used throughout the document that you may find helpful in clarifying what is being said in the standard. There are 5 tables: Common Addition and Subtraction situations, Common Multiplication and Division situations, the Properties of Operations, the Properties of Equality and the Properties of Inequality. (These are referenced throughoutthe document starting at Grade level 1.)

3.        Go to the standards.

If you are a K-8 teacher, make sure you look at the previous, current, and next year’s set of standards. This is to see where the students are coming from (helps to see the gaps in learning), where the current year’s focus is, and what to prepare the students to learn next. There are documents provided for you in Engrade that show the progression of the standards K-5 and 6-8.  The Georgia DOE curriculum maps for K-8 have been released and are posted in Engrade as well.

How to read the grade level standards

Standards define what students should understand and be able to do.

Clusters are groups of related standards. Note that standards from different clusters may sometimes be closely related, because mathematics is a connected subject.

Domains are larger groups of related standards. Standards from different domains may sometimes be closely related.
