New Guidance on Masks; Vaccination at High Schools

New Guidance on Masks; Vaccination Opportunities at High Schools
Posted on 06/04/2021

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff Members,

As you are probably aware, COVID-19 infection rates are decreasing in Douglas County, in Georgia, and across the country. Based on this encouraging data, masks will no longer be mandatory in Douglas County School System buildings and schools, effective June 7, 2021.

The Centers for Disease Control released new guidance in May indicating that masks are no longer necessary for fully vaccinated individuals. We encourage all of our eligible students and staff to take the COVID-19 vaccine, and we have a plan to assist with this endeavor.

In partnership with Premier Drugstore and Cobb & Douglas Public Health, all of our five high schools will host a vaccination event this summer. We encourage any student who is age 12 or older and any employee who has not yet been vaccinated to take advantage of this opportunity. The dates, times, and locations are listed below this letter. Students and staff members do not need an appointment, and they may go to any location. There is no cost to receive the vaccine.

I deeply appreciate the cooperation of our students, staff, and families this year as we implemented protocols to keep everyone safe. Because of your cooperation and the contact tracing done by our school nurses and others, we were able to keep our schools open and keep students learning.

In closing, I would like to encourage any individual who is still more comfortable wearing a mask around others to continue wearing a mask in our buildings. I fully believe that masks cut down on COVID transmission over the last 15 months and kept people safer during a dangerous time. I respect that some people will be more comfortable wearing a facial covering in public for several more months.

As always, I appreciate the support of our families and staff. I am looking forward to an amazing 2021-2022 school year. Enjoy your summer.

Best regards,

Trent North, Superintendent
