The Douglas County Gifted Program (often times referred to as Program Challenge in elementary school) is funded by the State of Georgia. In Georgia, a gifted education student is defined as one who demonstrates a high degree of intellectual and/or creative ability(ies), exhibits an exceptionally high degree of motivation, and/or excels in specific academic fields, and who needs special instruction and/or special ancillary services to achieve at levels commensurate with his or her ability(ies).

Instructional Gifted Program

Philosophy


Douglas County School System’s Gifted Program is a state-mandated instructional program designed to meet the needs of identified gifted students.  As required by federal, state, and system rules and regulations, the Gifted Program adheres to all state-mandated gifted education regulations and requirements, including those of program delivery and FTE and does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, religion, national origin, sex, disability, or economic background.

In conjunction with the educational philosophy of the school system, we recognize the right of the gifted students to develop to their fullest potential.  In order to help these students become life-long independent learners, the Gifted Program implements required standards (CCGPS/Gifted/AP/IB) using approved course frameworks and resources.   REFERRALS FOR GIFTED PROGRAM

    1. Automatic Referral- Students who score at the 90% in total reading or total math on the August STAR test will qualify as an automatic referral. These scores are reviewed along with other available data to determine if further assessment is required.   
    2. Reported Referral- A student may be referred for consideration for educational services for the gifted by: teachers, counselors, administrators, parents or guardians, self and other individuals with knowledge of the student’s abilities.
      1. As part of the RTI process, each teacher will gather data using the TABs form. Students who exhibit characteristics consistently in one or more categories (not necessarily in all categories) should be discussed at weekly team meetings to determine if a referral is appropriate. 
      2. A student may be referred once each school year, but shall be tested only every other year.


Once a student has been found eligible for Gifted Services, each building level administrator has the autonomy to determine which model(s) will be provided to best meet the needs of the students in each building.  Services may include:

Direct Services 

Resource Class (K-12)  Advanced Content (K-12) Advanced Content Classes: Advanced Placement (AP) courses (9-12), and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses in Diploma Program (11-12) Cluster Grouping (K-12)

Indirect Services 

Collaborative Teaching (K-12)
