         What is AVID?
AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, helps schools and teachers make learning more meaningful and engaging. Research tells us that the most powerful influence on academic achievement is a caring teacher. When students care and connect to both their learning and their teacher, they will succeed!

AVID’s Mission: To close the achievement gap by preparing ALL students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID for Elementary Schools AVID Elementary engages young learners and provides them with the critical skills to become confident, independent thinkers. Teachers use AVID strategies to provide students with:
• Proven ways to succeed in school
• Writing to learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and      Reading to learn
• Note-taking and time management skills
• Best ways to work together inside and outside the                classroom

AVID in Douglas County Schools
AVID will serve as the instructional infrastructure for all elementary school students in 3rd - 5th grade.
Douglas County will be the 12th AVID district in the state of Georgia.
Douglas County Schools’ initial focus will be note-taking, organization, and creating a college-bound culture.

Nationally, AVID students excel in success metrics, which is impressive given the adversity of low socioeconomic status, underrepresented race/ethnicity and parents with no college experience.

98% graduate from high school

93% complete four-year college entrance requirements

79% are accepted into four year colleges

88% persist into their second year of college

AVID Secondary
At the Middle and High School levels, AVID builds a college-going culture by bringing best practices and methodologies to the students.  The goal to close the achievement gap by preparing students starts with the AVID elective class and grows school wide.   The AVID elective class provides explicit instruction in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR) strategies so that students have the skills necessary to meet expectations of rigorous academic courses.  College and career exploration become a strong focus including organized college campus visits and completion of college applications.

AVID supports students in rigorous courses by building a community of peer support, providing academic help from tutors , and participating in motivational activities to help students achieve their dreams.

AVID High School elective class continues to grow and support student success in rigorous courses extending to honors and Advanced Placement(AP).  Middle and High school students not in the AVID elective class are supported by AVID educators who integrate strategies and and best practices into content area classes.

The power of AVID Secondary is the ability to impact students in the AVID Elective class and all students throughout the campus.  AVID Secondary can have an effect on the entire school by providing classroom activities, teaching practices, and academic behaviors that can be incorporated into any classroom to improve engagement and success for all students.   Teachers can take what they've learned at AVID training back to any classroom to help all students, not just those in AVID, to become more college and career ready.

All 20 DCSS Elementary Schools will be participating in AVID for the 2020-2021 school year.
