Douglas County High School Stadium Renovation Progressing on Schedule

The Douglas County High School Tigers spent this season playing football games in other stadiums, but the team expects to return to its home turf in 2021. Stadium renovations are progressing on schedule. The old standalone field house, locker room and weight room have been razed and a new consolidated two-story building is taking shape. The new construction is on the Selman Avenue side of the stadium currently known as the “visitors’ side.” When all work is completed, the Selman Avenue side of the stadium will be the “home side” and will seat approximately 3,500 people, bringing the stadium’s total seating capacity to 5,000.

Douglas County High School Stadium Renovation Underway

As part of a planned renovation of the football facilities at Douglas County High School, the school system has begun demolition of the Selman Avenue side of the stadium along with the field house, locker room and weight room.

With a projected seating capacity of approximately 3,500 on the new side of the stadium and a current capacity on the existing stadium side of approximately 1,500, the renovated stadium will seat 5,000. The standalone field house, locker room and weight room will be razed and consolidated into one two-story structure, which will allow additional room for the construction of the new stadium side.

“We are excited that we can provide our community with an updated, state-of-the-art football facility at Douglas County High School,” said Superintendent Trent North. “As the oldest high school in the county, the campus holds sentimental value for many alumni in our community. Athletics is an important part of the high school experience, and students will benefit for years to come.”

The Selman Avenue side of the stadium, currently known as the “visitors’ side,” was constructed over 60 years ago. The structure has been modified and repaired over the years. In early 2019, the school system entered into a contract with Cole Hil, an architectural firm with offices in Atlanta and Douglasville, to investigate the feasibility of continuing to repair and modify the existing stadium or replace it. The recommendation was to replace that side of the stadium.

The construction is expected to take one year and will require that Douglas County High School schedule its athletic competitions that entail use of a stadium as “away” events for the 2020-2021 season. The project is being funded through ESPLOST.
