Phil Powell, a senior at New Manchester High School in Douglas County and a part-time employee at Walmart, recently gained fame for an unusual act of kindness that went viral on social media and was covered on local and national TV stations.

On July 29, Phil was checking receipts at Walmart on Thornton Road in Lithia Springs when he noticed a man enter with no shoes. When the man left the store, Phil noticed that he still had no shoes, only necessities that made him think that this could be a homeless family. Phil followed the man outside and asked if he needed shoes. When his wife said yes, Phil took off his shoes, gave them to the man, shook his hand, and ran back into the store.

A lady who observed the transaction followed Phil back into the store and insisted on taking his picture. Her Facebook post went viral, and the rest is history.

When asked about his actions, Phil said that he had been homeless in the past and knew what it felt like to be blessed by others. “I know how it feels to receive something you never had.”

Before the good deed at Walmart, Phil was already known for his generosity at New Manchester High School. Ms. Penny Hause, registration clerk at the school, knows a lot of students. She said that Phil has always been “an awesome kid, always helpful, polite, and willing to help.”

Dr. Gordon Pritz, Superintendent for the Douglas County School System, will honor Phil for his generosity at the Board of Education meeting on September 6. “We appreciate Phil for shining a positive light on New Manchester High School, the Douglas County School System, and Douglas County. We are proud that he is one of ours.”
