Sweetwater Elementary School teacher Lori Gordy was honored as a “Symetra Hero in the Classroom” on Oct. 26, 2015, during a surprise school assembly. Gordy teaches fifth grade at the Lithia Springs, Georgia, school. The presentation was made by Symetra, SunTrust and the Atlanta Falcons.

“Lori Gordy is a dynamic, creative teacher who expects nothing but the best from her students. She understands the external factors that can prevent a child from learning — and differentiates her instructional methods to accommodate each student,” said Kay Solomon, the parent of a Sweetwater student. “Importantly, Mrs. Gordy is just as concerned with her students' behavioral and emotional well-being as she is with how they're doing academically. She helps students understand the impact of their actions, rewarding them when they've gone above and beyond — and lovingly, but sternly, correcting them when they've not met behavioral and/or academic expectations. Solomon nominated Gordy for the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom® award.

“Mrs. Gordy is passionate about teaching. She absolutely loves her students, and they know she loves them, while holding them to the highest standards,” said Solomon. “As a parent, I am so glad my daughter had her for several subjects, in addition to being her Reading Bowl coach for two years. Sweetwater Elementary is so incredibly fortunate to have her there as a fifth-grade teacher. I wish there were many more Mrs. Gordy's; it would certainly make a difference in student learning.”

Gordy is one of 16 K–12 teachers in Georgia who will be honored for educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2015 NFL season. Teachers are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations, and they receive a $1,000 donation for classroom books and supplies. In addition, they receive tickets to a Falcons home game and are acknowledged during an on-field presentation at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Gordy will be recognized at the Nov. 1 game when the Falcons take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent.
The winners are selected based on their ability to make a real difference in students' lives; to go above and beyond in their day-to-day responsibilities; and to help students build life skills.
