LSHS Graduate Selected for National Youth Science Camp back button

Alexander Nichols, 2015 Lithia Springs High School graduate, was selected to represent Georgia as a delegate to the 2015 National Youth Science Camp (NYSC). Alexander joined 113 other top high school graduates representing the United States as well as students from around the world from June 17–July 11. The NYSC is located in the beautiful and rustic setting of the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. The delegates were exposed to various scientific lectures and activities, as well as the opportunity to explore music, art, and the outdoors.

Each year, scientists from various disciplines travel to the camp to present lectures and lead directed studies. This year’s lecture topics were: statistics and science policy, finding a cure for cancer, and fractal mathematics. Throughout camp, a Directed Study series provided extensive “hands-on” experiences in specific fields. Delegates had the opportunity to dissect a human brain, discuss cybersecurity, and search through the DNA sequence of a genetic disease.

In addition to learning about groundbreaking scientific research, delegates explored their natural surroundings through an extensive outdoor program consisting of hiking, caving, mountain biking, and rock climbing. The delegates chose from seminars ranging from Ultimate Frisbee and swing dancing to discussions of philosophy, travel, religion, and culture.

The National Youth Science Camp, operating for over 50 years since its inception in 1963, is operated by the National Youth Science Foundation. For more information, please visit www.nysf.com.

The Douglas County School System is proud of Alexander’s continued success. He is a 2015 recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship and plans to attend Davidson College to major in Environmental Studies and Education.
