A summary of the May 6, 2013 Board of Education meeting follows.

Superintendent’s Spotlight: The week of May 6-10 was proclaimed as National Teacher Appreciation Week with May 7 being proclaimed as Teacher Appreciation Day. Ms. Pam Nail, Associate Superintendent of Student Achievement and Leadership, read the proclamation.  The week of May 6-10 was proclaimed as School Nutrition Employee Week. Ms. Julia Thomas, President of the Douglas County Nutrition Association, read the proclamation. May 6-10 was proclaimed as National School Nurse Week. Mr. Zach Spencer, Director of Safety, read the proclamation.

Students selected to represent Douglas County in the  Governor’s Honors Program were recognized as follows: Alexander High School: Sung Soo, Eleventh Grade, Math, and Savannah Banks, Eleventh Grade, Visual Arts; Chapel Hill High School:  Daryl Mitchell, Tenth Grade, Communicative Arts, and Anthony Picas, Eleventh Grade, Architectural Design; Douglas County High: Korey Brown, Tenth Grade, Theatre Performance; Dana Francisco, Eleventh Grade, Communicative Arts; Katherine Haire, Tenth Grade, Communicative Arts; Sada Harris, Eleventh Grade, Music ~ Brass; Nia Kapitanova, Eleventh Grade, Spanish, and Ugochi Ndolo, Eleventh Grade, French; Lithia Springs High School: Kymble Talps, Tenth Grade, Theatre Performance; and New Manchester High School, Kaelyn Holmes, Eleventh Grade, Theatre Performance.  

The following students were recognized as county level winners in the Young Georgia Authors Competition: Gavin Smith-Hall, Kindergarten, Eastside Elementary; Braylon Robison, First Grade, Winston Elementary; Deborah Osime, Second Grade, Eastside Elementary; Kaden Harris, Third Grade, Mason Creek Elementary; Dexter Purnell, Fourth Grade, Mason Creek Elementary; Skye Richardson, Fifth Grade, North Douglas Elementary; Paola Rosado, Sixth Grade, Chapel Hill Middle; Kai Hartman, Seventh Grade, Stewart Middle; Tatyana Davis, Eighth Grade, Stewart Middle; Aaron Brown, Ninth Grade, Alexander High; Kaylah Holmes, Tenth Grade, Alexander High; Ayanna Tillman, Eleventh Grade, Douglas County High; and Joshua Dyar, Twelfth Grade, Douglas County High.

The following school nurses were recognized as part of National School Nurse Week: Charlotte Fulton, Shannon Hendrix, Nancy McCready, Carol Miller, Kay Thompson and Becky Wylie.

Ms. Diereshe Collins, Media Specialist at Mason Creek Elementary School, was recognized for being named the 2013 Douglas County Library Media Specialist of the Year.

Unfinished Business: The Douglas County School System Mission Statement was approved for the 2013-2014 school year. 

Consent Agenda: Personnel: Certified and classified personnel were approved. Mr. James Allen, Principal of Factory Shoals Middle School, will retire effective June 12, 2013. Ms. Pegi McCauley, Assistant Principal of Mason Creek Middle School, will retire effective June 12, 2013. Approval was granted for Chapel Hill High School to move from an Advanced Placement Theme School to a Magnet School for the 2014-2015 school year.  The FY2014 Pest Control Contract with Jaxx Pest Control was approved. Approval was granted for the FY2014 Solid Waste Management Contract with Waste Industries. The purchase of carpet from Milliken Carpet for replacement of worn and torn carpet at Lithia Springs High School and other schools throughout the system was approved. Approval was granted to approve the bid from Vaughn Tile for the removal and replacement of carpet at Lithia Springs High School.

Discussion Agenda: Information on the following items was presented for discussion: Student Achievement and Leadership: 1) Lithia Springs High School: SIG Purchase of Engineering Mobile Laptop Lab; 2) Reading Street/Calle de la Lectura to Support K-5 Dual Language Program for English and Spanish at Beulah Elementary; 3) Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center Membership; and 4) Purchase of License Agreement and Supportive Training for PD360-Online Professional Learning Program. Operations: 1) Technology Update; 2) Fire Suppression System Replacement; 3) Occupational Health, Drug and Alcohol Screenings Bid; 4) Chapel Hill High School Reroofing; 5) Alexander High School HVAC System; 6) Douglas County High School Bus Loop Repaving; and 7) Grease Trap Pumping/Maintenance.

Action Agenda: Finance: 1) 2013-2014 Proposed Furlough Days were approved, 2) The Marketing Rights Agreement was approved as presented by Education Funding Partners with Classrooms by WalMart; and 3) The Superintendent was authorized to move forward with the district’s settlement agreement regarding Brighten Academy Funding. Operations: 1) Approval was granted to name Ra-Lin Construction as the Construction Manager for the Renovation of the Douglas County High School Auxiliary Gym and Roof Replacement of the Warren Dorris Building; and 2) A Resolution certifying that all accounts for the construction of Factory Shoals Elementary School have been paid in full was approved. Policies: Board Policy JBCB, Non-Resident Students, was presented for a second reading and was approved.     

Information Only: The following items were presented for information only: A) GSBA Governance Team Self-Assessment; B) Over Night/Out of State Field Trips; C) Summer Camps; D) JBCB-R(1) Non-Resident Students; E) JBCB-E(1) Non-Resident Student Application and Contract; F) KM-R(1) Questioning of Students by Law Enforcement on School Premises; and G) Professional Learning Opportunities - Summer and Beyond.  

Present were Board Members Janet Kelley, District III, Chair; Carol Lindstrom, District I; D.T. Jackson, District II; and Dr. Sam Haskell, District IV. Also present were Superintendent Dr. Gordon Pritz; Associate Superintendent of Student Achievement and Leadership Pam Nail; Chief Operating Officer Dudley Spruill; Chief Financial Officer Greg Denney; Executive Director of Student Services E. Renee Davis; Executive Director of Personnel and Policy Dr. Michelle Ruble; Community Relations Director Karen Stroud; and Secretary to the Superintendent Melanie Nicholson.

Upcoming Meetings of the Douglas County Board of Education:
Special Called Board Meeting on May 20, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. - Budget Planning Meeting Regular Board Meeting on May 20, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

All board meetings of each month will be a regular voting session. Board meetings are called to order at 6:00 p.m., then move immediately into executive session. At 7:00 p.m., the public meeting is reconvened.
