GMAS Testing Begins in April

This spring, every student enrolled in third through eighth grade in Douglas County as well as in public schools throughout Georgia will participate in the Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS) by taking the End-of-Grade test. High school students enrolled in the following courses will also participate in the GMAS by taking the End-of- Course test: 9th Grade Literature, American Literature, Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, Physical Science, U.S. History, and Economics.

GMAS is a comprehensive summative assessment that measures how well students have mastered content and skills as outlined in the state-adopted standards in language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. This assessment system is designed to provide students with information regarding their achievement and readiness for their next level of learning, whether it is the next grade or next course.

Schools will provide student test results to parents informally as soon as they are available this spring. An official copy of the test results will be sent home at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. This information is used to diagnose individual student’s strengths and weaknesses and to gauge the quality of education.

Students in third, fifth, and eighth grade must obtain a reading score at or above grade level on the English Language Arts GMAS in order to be promoted to the next grade. Students in fifth and eighth grade must also score at the developing learner or higher level on the mathematics GMAS in order to be promoted to the next grade. For high school students, scores on the GMAS count as 20% of the final grade for the course.

Please click here or contact your child’s school for a complete testing schedule. For more information on the GMAS visit the Georgia Department of Education. For information regarding on-line testing, visit www.gaexperienceonline.com

Please encourage your child to do his/her best on these assessments. Attendance and prompt arrival to school are important to your child’s success. Testing in elementary and middle schools will begin as soon as school starts each day. Please ensure that your child gets adequate rest and eats a healthy breakfast.

Thank you for your support!
