A team from Lithia Springs High School placed 2nd at the National History Day regional competition at Kennesaw State University on March 11. The team will advance to the state competition at Mercer University on April 22. Team members are Robert Gish, Lauren Jordan, Ireland McBride, Tiffany Robinson, and Sara Sweet. Team sponsor is U.S. History teacher Eric Tedder. This was the first time a team from LSHS has competed in National History Day.

The theme of the competition was “Taking a Stand in History.” LSHS chose the topic “The Bielski Otriad: Defying Hitler’s Final Solution,” about a group of Jewish brothers in Belorussia who started a resistance movement against the Nazis and the Holocaust. Team members spent more than a month researching, writing, gathering evidence and artifacts, and preparing for their exhibit for the competition. They are now working to improve the project before submitting it for the state event.

National History Day in Georgia is a program of Georgia Humanities and LaGrange College in partnership with Mercer University. Its aim is to encourage middle and high school students to engage more deeply in the historical process through research and presentation of that research along with analysis. Promoting history and civics, National History Day attracts thousands of participants each year. In self-directed projects and under the guidance of a sponsoring teacher, students choose both their subject matter and final presentation vehicle: exhibition, website, or performance. Competitions occur at the regional, state, and national levels.
