Summary of the June 3 Board of Education Meeting

A summary of the June 3, 2013 Board of Education meeting follows.

Superintendent’s Spotlight: Dr. Pritz recognized Ms. Tara Arbegast, physical education teacher at Bright Star Elementary School, as the Atlanta Falcons and Kimberly-Clark Professional 2012-2013 First Down for Fitness Teacher of the Year. For this honor, Bright Star Elementary School will be receiving a $1,000 physical education equipment grant to further emphasize the importance of physical activity and healthy eating to their students.

Communities in School of Douglas County and the Douglas County School System received a grant from the United Way of Greater Atlanta in January to implement The Vision and Voice Parent Leadership Institute or PLI. The PLI offered an exciting opportunity to a select group of parents in the district through a series of intensive workshops designed to train and support emerging parent leaders. The goal of the PLI was to build the skills and capacity of parents to take greater leadership roles in the system serving their child, including early learning programs and schools. The Douglas County PLI began in January 2013 with a group of twenty-six parents selected from the seven Title I elementary schools in Douglas County. The parents have met for six hours per month since January and graduated on May 14, 2013. Dr. Pritz recognized the following graduates of the program: Annette Winn Elementary School: Casonja Lewis, Lisa Lottinger, Raquel Silva, and Shameka Simmons; Beulah Elementary School: Evangelina Ramirez and Yadira Rivera; Burnett Elementary School: Alberta Peek, Hanethia Smith and Dana Traylor; Eastside Elementary School: Taeshia Glanton, Deborah Horton, Capucine Pansy and Chris Stroud; Lithia Springs Elementary School: Monica Fierro, Cheri Robinson and Amy Vaughn; North Douglas Elementary School: Akeem Adeyemo, Daishia Richardson, Laura Rico and Kelly Sampson; Sweetwater Elementary School: Ana Lilia Cruz, Rick Martin, Dawn Nottage and Sylvia Williamson.

Unfinished Business: The Governance Team Self-Assessment was approved.    

Consent Agenda: Personnel: Certified and classified personnel were approved. Ms. Angela Carter was named  Principal of Factory Shoals Middle School effective July 17, 2013. She is currently the Assistant Principal at Factory Shoals Middle. Mr. Greg Williams was named Assistant Principal at Mason Creek Middle School. He is currently an Assistant Principal at Chestnut Log Middle School. Ms. Tracey Seymour was named the Assistant Principal at North Douglas Elementary School effective July 17, 2013. She is currently an Assistant Principal at Douglas County High School. The Superintendent’s Contract was approved through June 2016.  Approval was granted for the one year upgrade for Accelerated Reader Program. The Annual Renewal of the Microsoft Premier Support Agreement was approved. The Increase in Selected Meal Prices was approved as follows: Student Breakfast at all levels: from $1.00 to $1.25; Adult Breakfast: from $1.60 to $1.65; Staff Lunch: from $2.80 to $3.00; Guest Lunch:  from $2.80 to $3.50. 
Discussion Agenda: Information on the following items was presented for discussion: Student Achievement and Leadership: 1) Bridge Bill Update; 2) Comprehensive Therapy Consultants Agreement for 2013-2014 for Special Education Students; and 3) Speech Therapy Services Provided by Therapy Travelers for Special Education Students. Finance:  1) Surplus of Classroom Furniture and Buses. Operations: 1) Douglas County High School Auxiliary Gym Renovation and Warren Dorris Roof Replacement Guaranteed Maximum Price; 2) Annex West Warehouse Reroofing; 3) Surplus of Food Service Equipment; and 4) Milk, Dairy and Miscellaneous Beverage Bid.

Action Agenda: Student Achievement and Leadership: 1) The Purchase of License Agreement and Supportive Training for PD360-Online Professional Learning Program was approved. Finance: 1) The second Public Hearing on the FY 2013-2014 Budget was held. Approval of the budget was tabled until the June 17, 2013 Board Meeting. Operations: 1) Approval was granted to Surplus Various Technology Equipment. 

Information Only: The following items were presented for information only: A) Elementary Discipline JD-R(2); B) Middle and High School Discipline JD-R(3); and C) Summer Camps.  

Present were Board Members Janet Kelley, District III, Chair; Jeff Morris, District V, Vice Chair; Carol Lindstrom, District I; D.T. Jackson, District II; and Dr. Sam Haskell, District IV. Also present were Superintendent Dr. Gordon Pritz; Associate Superintendent of Student Achievement and Leadership Pam Nail; Chief Operating Officer Dudley Spruill; Chief Financial Officer Greg Denney; Executive Director of Student Services E. Renee Davis; Executive Director of Personnel and Policy Dr. Michelle Ruble; Community Relations Specialist Brenda Spain; and Secretary to the Superintendent Melanie Nicholson.

Upcoming Meetings of the Douglas County Board of Education:
Regular Board Meeting on June 17, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.
Regular Board Meeting on July 22, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.  

All board meetings of each month will be a regular voting session. Board meetings are called to order t 6:00 p.m., then move immediately into executive session. At 7:00 p.m., the public meeting is reconvened.
