A Two-Way Immersion Program provides literacy and content instruction to all students through two languages.  The program promotes biliteracy, grade-level academic achievement and multicultural competence for all students.  The program provides the same academic content and addresses the same standards as other educational programs.  Approximately half of the students are native speakers of Spanish and half are native speakers of English.  The body of research shows that by teaching literacy through both languages, by 3rd or 4th grade native English speakers usually outscore their peers in monolingual classrooms regardless of socio-economic background of the student.

Goals of Two-Way Immersion

 1.    Students will develop high levels of proficiency in their 1st language.

2.    All students will develop high levels of proficiency in a second language.

3.    Academic performance for both groups will be at or above grade level.

4.    All students will demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors.

Family Commitment

Families are an integral part of the Two-Way Immersion program.  Parents and guardians are asked to make the following commitments to their children in the program.

•  Make every effort for your child to remain at Beulah through 5th grade.

•  Good student attendance.

•  Commitment to the school and an active role in the overall school program.

•  Read with your child 30 minutes each day.

Before enrolling a child in the two-way Immersion program, parents and guardians are also asked to sign a Letter of Commitment indicating that they understand the obligation they are making to their child and the school.
