College and University Collaborative Placement Information

The Douglas County School System welcomes collaboration with organizations supporting higher education, Colleges and Universities.  We recognize the benefit to all stakeholders when higher education candidates engage in classroom observations, field and student teaching experiences.  To ensure the safety of our students, educators, and placement candidates, we adhere to the following guidelines:

1.  All placement requests (observation, field experience, student teaching experience) must be made with the Douglas County School System Professional Learning Office by the higher education organization (i.e.:  College or University Field Placement Office).

  • No school, administrator, or teacher within the Douglas County School System should be directly contacted by the organization or candidate until placement is approved and secured through the DCSS Professional Learning Office.

2.  Higher education organizations who enter into an agreement with the Douglas County School System (Memorandum of Agreement or Memorandum of Understanding) will be prioritized and candidates from these organizations will be placed within the school system first.

Organizations who wish to enter into an agreement with the Douglas County School System should contact the Professional Learning Office and ensure their proposed memorandum includes verification of a background check and liability insurance along with the guidelines provided on this webpage.

Currently, the DCSS has entered into an agreement with the following organizations of higher education:

    • American Public University System; until terminated by either party
    • Atlanta Metro College; until terminated by either party

3.  Higher education candidates who wish to collaborate with the Douglas County School System for observation, field placement, or student teaching without an organization agreement should follow these steps:

  • Request that the Field Placement Office from your organization contact the DCSS Professional Learning Office and indicate:
    • Placement level preference (elementary, middle, high)
    • Placement content preference
    • Placement with specific school and/or teacher; however, this is not guaranteed
  • Secure a background check and submit to the DCSS Professional Learning Office 10 weeks prior to placement request
  • Provide proof of professional liability insurance to the DCSS Professional Learning Office 10 weeks prior to placement request

4.  Current Douglas County School System employees or current substitute teachers should be identified when the placement request is made.

5.  Candidate placement requests received 10 weeks prior to the placement timeframe have a much better likelihood of successful placement.  Every effort will be made to secure placement; however, no placement requests will be accepted with less than three weeks notice; inclusive of required documentation.

6  Once placement is agreed upon, the DCSS Professional Learning Office must be notified of any changes.
