Mr. James Strong, Assistant Director

Opportunities to participate in scholastic and interscholastic activities are numerous for all eligible middle and high school students. Students participating in interscholastic sports and fine arts at school tend to have higher grade-point averages, better attendance rates, lower dropout rates and fewer discipline problems than students generally. The activities provide students expanded learning opportunities which include teamwork, respect for self and others, the desire to win, mental and physical self-discipline, and pride in their school and community.

All five high schools in the Douglas County School System are members of the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) and abide by its by-laws as well as regulations of the Board of Education. The objective of the GHSA is the promotion of education in Georgia from a mental, physical, and moral viewpoint, to standardize and encourage participation in athletics, and to promote sportsmanship and an appreciation for and study of music, speech, and other fine arts through Region and State competitions.

The GHSA recently reclassified all high schools within the state according to student enrollment. Additionally, a sixth classification was created.  Due to reclassification, our high schools will be competing in different classifications.  Following are the classifications of each high school and the region they will compete in:

Douglas County High School - Region 5AAAAAA
Lithia Springs High School - Region 6AAAAA
New Manchester High School - Region 5AAAAAA
Alexander High School - Region 5AAAAAA
Chapel Hill High School - Region 4AAAA

All eight middle schools in the Douglas County School System compose the Middle School Athletic Conference and abide by the by-laws established for the conference as well as applicable regulations of the GHSA and the Douglas County Board of Education.

Participation in interscholastic activity programs in the Douglas County School System is entirely voluntary. The opportunity to participate in the program is extended to all eligible students who are willing to assume the responsibilities congruent with the privilege. Students must meet residency and academic requirements and abide by the Douglas County Code of Conduct.  Before participating, students are required to have a GHSA Pre-participation Physical Form completed by a Medical Doctor, and complete the Douglas County School System Release/Emergency Medical Form. All forms are available from local schools  Students participating in interscholastic activities, as well as other privileged activities, are subject to random drug testing. Specifics concerning the drug testing program can be found on this web site. Each school has an Athletic Director which can offer assistance in regards to sports and programs offered at each school.

Vital to the success of our interscholastic programs is community and parental support. Interscholastic activities are funded through ticket revenues as well as fund raisers. Parents are encouraged to join booster clubs for respective sports and programs to assist in raising funds and offering support in other ways. In doing so, we can ensure the continuation of providing quality programs for our students.

Douglas County coaches and athletes are expected to abide by the highest standards of fair play and sportsmanship. Our goal is to make the most positive contribution possible to the physical, emotional, and social well being of students by providing opportunities to participate in a variety of sports, programs and activities.
